OMVIC is clarifying its guidance on the sale of demonstrator (demo) vehicles. Once a vehicle is registered by a dealer, it is considered a used vehicle. There is no mileage threshold that changes this classification.

Registrants are responsible for ensuring all disclosures are accurate and compliant. Demo vehicles may continue to be advertised and sold as part of new vehicle incentive programs (e.g., manufacturer interest rates).

Advertising of demo vehicles

Demo vehicles require the following disclosures in the advertising of the demo vehicle and the contracts.

  • Demo vehicles must be clearly advertised as used.
  • Avoid using “new” if the vehicle has been issued an ownership.
  • Must include actual history.
  • Must include status of the vehicle being sold.

Contracts and disclosures of demo vehicles

Contracts must comply with used vehicle disclosure requirements, including:

  • Vehicle is a used demonstrator.
  • Must include actual history.
  • Must include status of the vehicle being sold.
  • In-service date (when warranty began).
  • Remaining warranty coverage.
  • Current odometer reading.
