The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has selected a new vendor to supply Vehicle Information Number (VIN) decoding data starting on July 1st, 2026.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has selected a new vendor to supply Vehicle Information Number (VIN) decoding data starting on July 1st, 2026.

VIN decoding data is received from a third-party vendor and is used during original vehicle registration transactions to automatically populate vehicle specific information in the licensing system and Digital Dealer Registration (DDR) self-service application, including key characteristics such as the make, model and year encoded within the VIN.

There are no expected impacts to the Ontario vehicle registration process. However, minor changes may occur including differences in how vehicle model names populate in Ontario’s vehicle registration system when a vehicle is initially registered in the province.
