Closing a Dealership

If a dealer is closing their business, they are required to file a Dealership Cancellation Notice within five days of the closure and provide an explanation to OMVIC. The dealership cannot conduct the business of trading vehicles unless registration is reinstated or represent itself as being registered with OMVIC.

Dealers will be required to remit any outstanding transaction fees collected from customers when filing the Dealership Cancellation Notice.

All registration certificates, decals and any other evidence of registration with OMVIC must be returned to OMVIC. Also, the dealership will no longer be able to transfer vehicle registrations at the Ministry of Transportation without first obtaining OMVIC’s consent.

Remaining inventory

Dealers who have voluntarily closed their business are generally allowed to sell any vehicles remaining in inventory to another OMVIC-registered dealer. To obtain approval, the dealership must submit a signed statement with the following information:

  • Confirmation that dealership is closing.
  • List of all vehicles remaining in inventory including the VIN, make, model and year.
  • Explanation of how the dealership intends to sell (or dispose of) their remaining vehicles.

This information can be submitted online or be sent to [email protected].
