July 1 marked an important milestone for Ontario’s motor vehicle sales industry as OMVIC’s continuing education requirement officially came into effect for dealers and salespeople when renewing their registration. Continuing education courses became available to registrants earlier this year, on April 1, to support the implementation of this requirement.
As part of OMVIC’s initiatives as a modern regulator, continuing education advances the strategic goal of strengthening industry professionalism through ongoing learning. OMVIC’s continuing education program aims to support registrants in strengthening their knowledge and professionalism, enhance compliance with evolving regulations, and help them stay up to date with industry trends and consumer expectations. These efforts are helping build a culture of continuous learning that supports higher professional standards, stronger compliance, and greater consumer confidence.
Over the past year, OMVIC’s leadership team travelled across the province to meet directly with dealers and salespeople through approximately 50 open houses and dealership visits, while webinars and online resources helped prepare registrants for implementation, establishing a dedicated page to educate dealers and salespeople about the program and its requirements.
Industry progress and compliance update
Since continuing education launched on April 1, more than 1,800 registrants have enrolled in OMVIC’s Raising Excellence in Vehicle Sales (REVS) program, with more than 1,100 successfully completing their assigned education requirements. As more registrants approach their renewal dates, participation continues to grow.
Early participation demonstrates the industry’s commitment to professionalism, while also reinforcing the importance of completing assigned education before renewal. At the same time, continuing education is now a mandatory part of the registration renewal process. Since July 1, more than 40 registrations have been terminated because the assigned education requirement was not completed before renewal.
