Effective January 1, 2026, a new streamlined process will be implemented for dealers conducting trade outside of their registered locations. Under this change, dealers may apply individually for an Offsite Trade Permit through their portal account, enabling a more efficient application process.

An Offsite Trade Permit is a temporary authorization issued by the Registrar that allows dealers in General class to conduct trade at events or shows outside their registered location. This permit is required for any event where salespersons conduct trade on behalf of their dealership.

Who Requires this Permit?

Dealers planning to conduct trade or participate in shows outside of their registered location must submit an Offsite Trade Application through their portal account and obtain a permit before the event.
This requirement applies to individual shows, tent sales, and major auto shows, including the Canadian International Auto Show and the Toronto Motorcycle and Powersports Show.

Application Timeline

To ensure timely processing, Offsite Trade Applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the event.

Required Documentation

Applications must include:

  • A valid municipal permit to conduct trade at a specific location (where applicable).
  • A copy of the lease, rental agreement, or a letter from the event organizer in the dealership’s name.

Permit Duration

The Offsite Trade Permit is issued for a maximum of 30 consecutive days. Upon approval, the permit will be issued to the dealership, allowing all registered salespersons to participate in the approved event or show.

Compliance Requirements

  • Each dealer entity must submit a separate application.
  • Permits must be prominently displayed at the event.
  • All salespersons interacting with customers must be currently registered with OMVIC.
  • Advertising must clearly identify both participating dealers and the organizing entity.
  • Vehicles on display at the event must be clearly labeled with the selling dealer’s name.
  • The event venue must comply with applicable zoning bylaws and obtain all necessary permits and licenses.

Trading motor vehicles outside of the approved location constitutes a violation under MVDA Section 28 of Ontario Regulation.
