Wherever you are in Ontario, OMVIC’s rules support a fair marketplace so you can trade with confidence. As spring and summer events begin it’s important to remain compliant when sales staff are operating outside of your dealership. If you’re selling or leasing vehicles, collecting leads, or running test drives outside of your approved location, you must obtain an Offsite Trade Permit. This includes activities that may lead to a sale, even if no transaction takes place offsite.
In January, OMVIC introduced new requirements for obtaining an Offsite Trade Permit. Here are 4 tips you need to know to stay compliant:
Tip #1: Review your events calendar now to identify required permits
Start by marking your calendar with any offsite events, sponsorships, or activations where salespeople or other dealership representatives will be present. For any event where business activity may occur, including advertising or lead generation, your dealership must obtain a permit.
Tip#2: Apply online for an Offsite Trade Permit through your OMVIC portal account
Marked your calendars? Apply for an Offsite Trade Permit online through your OMVIC portal account. This enables a more efficient and convenient process. When applying for a permit, be prepared to upload both a valid municipal permit to conduct trade at a specific location and a copy of the lease, rental agreement, or a letter from the event organizer.
Tip #3: Apply early and follow your permit duration
Apply early to allow time for processing. Applications for Offsite Trade Permits must be submitted at least two weeks prior to an event, though you are encouraged to submit your application earlier, if possible.
Remember that an Offsite Trade Permit is temporary. It is granted for a maximum of 30 consecutive days. Upon approval, the permit will be issued to the dealership, allowing all registered salespersons to participate in the approved event.
Tip #4: Know your responsibilities before participating in events
Once you receive a permit, remember that:
- Permits must be prominently displayed at the event
- Advertising must clearly identify both participating dealers and the organizing entity
- Vehicles on display at the event must be clearly labeled with the dealer’s name
All OMVIC rules remain in effect when you’re at an event.
Upholding Professionalism Everywhere
Industry professionalism is a shared responsibility that all dealers and salespersons are required to uphold both onsite at their dealership and during offsite events. A reminder that only OMVIC registered dealers and salespersons with a valid permit may participate in business activities, which includes buying, selling, leasing, advertising, negotiating a deal. Participation by unregistered illegal sellers is a violation of the rules.
Ensure that your Offsite Trade Permit is valid before attending any events. OMVIC’s enforcement team members may conduct offsite spot checks to verify compliance.
