Helpful tips to know before you purchase a vehicle

Buying a vehicle is one of the biggest financial decisions many Ontarians will make. Understanding your rights before you sign can help you avoid costly mistakes.
In a recent interview with Global News, OMVIC CEO and Registrar Maureen Harquail shared practical advice to help consumers navigate the car-buying process with confidence and know what to look for before committing to a purchase.

She also reminded consumers that while buying a vehicle can feel overwhelming, you’re always in control.
“Walking into a dealership can feel high-pressure, but remember: you’re in control. If you’re not happy with the offer, walk away. There’s nothing to lose.”
Before you buy, remember to:
- Verify who you’re buying from.
- Compare the advertised price with the bill of sale. If the price doesn’t match the advertised price (plus HST and licensing), walk away and contact OMVIC.
- Purchase your own vehicle history report before buying a used vehicle and compare it with what the seller has told you. If something doesn’t add up, don’t sign until you understand why.
- Get every promise, repair and agreement in writing.
- Take your time. There is no cooling-off period in Ontario once you sign a vehicle purchase agreement.
