  • One (1) Registrant Member (Ontario motor vehicle dealer or salesperson)

About OMVIC

OMVIC is a not-for-profit corporation responsible for regulating motor vehicle sales in Ontario through administering and enforcing the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act, 2002 (MVDA) and its regulations. OMVIC’s mandate is to maintain a fair, safe, and informed marketplace for motor vehicle sales in Ontario.

About the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund

OMVIC’s Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund is a consumer protection program financed by Ontario’s registered motor vehicle dealers. Where a consumer has an unresolved complaint arising from a motor vehicle purchase or lease transaction, the consumer may be eligible to apply for compensation from the MVDCF in accordance with the MVDA.

As the oldest and largest fund of its kind in Canada, the MVDCF plays a vital role in protecting consumers and maintaining confidence in Ontario’s automotive marketplace.

Commitment

  • Trustees are appointed for a three (3) year term, renewable to a maximum of six (6) years.
  • The Board of Trustees meets approximately six (6) to eight (8) times per year. Meetings are set at the beginning of the year.
  • Meetings are typically held virtually and scheduled for approximately three hours.
  • Trustees may be asked to serve on committees, as required.
  • Trustees are expected to prepare for meetings and actively contribute to discussion and decision‑making.

These appointments provide an opportunity to contribute to a key consumer protection program and to support confidence in Ontario’s motor vehicle sales industry.

Role of the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees has the primary purpose of administering the MVDCF and deciding on claims for financial restitution submitted by consumers who have suffered losses from transactions with OMVIC registered dealers. Operating in the public interest, the Board functions as an independent administrative entity that supports a fair and safe marketplace by providing financial recourse when a dealer fails to meet their obligations.

The Board is presently made up of nine members: four representatives from the motor vehicle sales industry; three appointed by the Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement; and two from the general public.

Compensation

Trustees receive:

  • Per diems for meetings attended; and
  • Reimbursement for reasonable out‑of‑pocket expenses related to board and committee work

Compensation is provided in accordance with OMVIC’s Board Remuneration Policy and Travel and Meal Expense Reimbursement Policy.
