OMVIC has entered into a new partnership with Toronto Crime Stoppers to help combat illegal vehicle sales and activity in Ontario. Through this partnership we look to further our mandate by partnering with community organizations with similar objectives to protect the car-buying public and hold those who break the law accountable.

OMVIC’s primary role as Ontario’s motor vehicle sales regulator is consumer protection. We achieve this through maintaining a fair and informed vehicle sales marketplace by regulating dealers and salespersons.

Illegal motor vehicle sales and activity is a growing issue across the province, with an estimated 30 per cent of vehicles listed online as for sale by owners being placed by illegal sellers. This poses a significant risk to consumers and adversely affects all registered dealers. Through this partnership we will be able to provide the community with an anonymous crime reporting platform to identify individuals involved in these crimes to the police, by completing an anonymous online tip form or by calling Toronto Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

This is a significant opportunity to raise consumer awareness about OMVIC’s role as the motor vehicle sales regulator, the importance of buying from an OMVIC-registered dealer and the risks associated with buying vehicles from curbsiders.
